SDG WEEK 1: Introduction to Sustainable Development
Salam and Hi everyone! During the first week of our Sustainable Development course, we were introduced to the topic sustainable development, the concept of sustainability and its significance. It was my first time truly understanding what sustainable really means. Prof Dr. Suhaimi explained that sustainability is a concept that refers to the ability of something to endure in the long term without harming the environment, society and economy. We also learned about the three pillars of sustainable development which are economic development, social sustainability and environmental conservation. These pillars highlight the importance of achieving balanced progress that fulfills human needs while protecting both society and the natural environment. Moreover, I found it very interesting that we also explored the evolution of sustainable development from sustainable development, to the Millennium Development Goals and finally to the 17 Sustainable development Goals (SDGs), as shown in the picture above. We then learned about the fundamental principles of sustainable development, known as the 5Ps framework: People, Planet, Prosperity, Peace and Partnership. Through this framework, it shows how each element plays an essential role in ensuring better living conditions for people, a healthier planet, stable economic growth, peaceful societies, and strong cooperation among communities.
