SDG WEEK 3: Maqasid Shariah and Sustainable Development

In week 3, the topic is about Maqasid Shariah and Sustainable Development. Maqasid al-Shariah, which refers to the higher objectives of Islamic law such as the preservation of faith, life, intellect, lineage, and property. They provides a comprehensive ethical framework that aligns closely with the principles of sustainable development. Both aim to ensure long-term well-being and justice by balancing human needs with social, economic, and environmental responsibilities. Through values like moderation (wasatiyyah), social justice, accountability, and protection of resources, Maqasid al-Shariah supports sustainable development goals by promoting responsible consumption, safeguarding human dignity, reducing harm, and ensuring equitable distribution of wealth. Ultimately, the synergy between Maqasid al-Shariah and sustainable development highlights how Islamic principles contribute to creating a balanced, just, and resilient society for present and future generations. SDG WEEK 2: Islam and Sustainable Development

In week 2, our focus shifted to sustainable development from an Islamic perspective and how it aligns with the teachings of Islam. Both the Qur'an and Hadith provide a comprehensive framework for ensuring the spiritual and physical well-being of humanity. Prof. Dr. Suhaimi emphasized our role as Khalifah Allah, which means we carry the responsibility and Amanah to take care for everything on this earth. This responsibility reflects the Islamic worldview that humans must act as guardians, not exploiters, of the environment. Environmental sustainability in Islam highlights the duty to use nature responsibily without causing harm. The teachings of Islam emphasize the importance of minimizing waste, safeguarding water resources and preserving trees and wildlife. Social sustainability is rooted in the principles of Rahmatan Lil 'Alamin (mercy to all the world), good governance based on Amanah and the practice of Shura. These principles ensure justice and compassion. Meanwhile, econo...

SDG WEEK 1: Introduction to Sustainable Development

Salam and Hi everyone! During the first week of our Sustainable Development course, we were introduced to the topic sustainable development, the concept of sustainability and its significance. It was my first time truly understanding what sustainable really means. Prof Dr. Suhaimi explained that sustainability is a concept that refers to the ability of something to endure in the long term without harming the environment, society and economy.  We also learned about the three pillars of sustainable development which are economic development, social sustainability and environmental conservation. These pillars highlight the importance of achieving balanced progress that fulfills human needs while protecting both society and the natural environment. Moreover, I found it very interesting that we also explored the evolution of sustainable development from sustainable development, to the Millennium Development Goals and finally to the 17 Sustainable development Goals (SDGs), as show...
